Specific cells that can grow indefinitely given the appropriate medium and conditions are known as a cell line. The significance in cell culturing that a cell line may have has to do with the purity and sterility of the original cells. If the cell line is not pure and has been exposed to other cells the experiment will be skewed. If an experiment is requiring a specific cell type the cell line is most important to remain the same and in its sterile form. If the cell line has been exposed to other cells it may mutate into another form and the experiment is no longer prevalent.
